An Act of God?

Since I was born in Fargo, North Dakota and grew up in Moorhead, Minnesota (and still have family members living in the area), I've been closely following the news regarding the record flooding there.  This morning while browsing through the Fargo Forum web site, I found out the Rev. Fred Phelps recently declared the Red River Valley flood crisis was God’s punishment for the city's tolerance of homosexuality. Another religious person wrote in claiming the flood is God’s punishment for abortion. Then another letter writer questioned why God has spared places like Las Vegas (known as "Sin City") from natural disasters.

Some people have wrongly called storms, floods and other natural disasters as "acts of God." The main reason these things happen is because we live in a fallen world largely ruled by Satan (2 Corinthians 4:4) who comes to "kill, steal, and destroy" but Jesus came to give us life and "have it more abundantly" (John 10:10). I've heard numerous testimonies of tragedies averted through prayer by God's people. I'm praying that God will continue protecting the Fargo-Moorhead area.  At the same time, I'm praying that people's eyes there will open to the fact that there are more important things than earthly possessions...mainly their eternal destinies!

I'm also praying that ministers like Fred Phelps will soften their hearts and cultivate a more Christ-like compassion towards homosexuals and abortionists. God hates sin but loves sinners and is "not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9).

"For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved." - John 3:17
