Banning the Bible

Image
One sign we are living in the last days is people easily taking offense (Matthew 24:10).  This certainly holds true with non-Christians not wanting God in any part of their lives whatsoever.  Gideon Bibles were recently removed from all 137 rooms of a lodge owned by the University of Wisconsin.  This was in response to a complaint filed by the Madison-based Freedom From Religion Foundation.   FFRF Co-President Dan Barker made the following statement, “We atheists and agnostics do not appreciate paying high prices for lodging, only to find Gideon Bibles in our hotel rooms, sometimes prominently displayed, knowing they contain instructions, for instance, to kill ‘infidels’ and ‘blasphemers,’ among other primitive and dangerous teachings.”   Barker’s statement is ludicrous for a couple reasons.  First of all, high hotel rates have nothing to do with whether or not there are Bibles in the room.  Gideons International has been distributing copies of the Bible for free since 1899.

Divine Delays

During my travels I learned to recognize what I call “divine delays.” Whenever I have been held up somewhere longer than expected, often they were set-ups by the Lord so someone can receive ministry. One time in Tampa, Florida, I walked to a corner to take the bus to Rodney Howard-Browne’s church. The bus was supposed to arrive at 9:50 a.m. but showed up over a half hour late. In the meantime, I passed out gospel tracts to people walking and biking by. Often bicyclists will grab tracts out of my hand like a relay runner taking the baton from another runner. One young boy on a bicycle named Dan stopped to listen to the gospel and got born again on the spot. Moments later I saw the bus coming.   In 2003 while visiting Germany, I prepared to travel to Berlin using Mitfahr Zentrale, which is like a car pool service. I was supposed to leave Kassel at 5:30 p.m. After 1½ hours passed without any sign of my ride showing up, I felt led to initiate a conversation with a man waiting fo

Free Will

A doctrine taught by some ministers is that believers don’t have free will. Recently a friend wrote on her Facebook wall, “When love invades your heart, where is the choice, the so-called free will? You turn into LOVE!” I wrote in response, “If Christians no longer have free will, then how come God doesn’t make every one of them take part in free-will offerings?”   That reminds me of one preacher who had someone tell him, “God makes people do whatever He wants them to do.” This preacher replied, “If that’s true, then how come He won’t make you pay your tithes?” Hebrews 10:25 commands us not to forsake “the assembling of ourselves together.”  Yet when I’m out evangelizing, I regularly meet Christians who don’t go to church for a variety of reasons. A believer who truly loves the Lord will want to obey Him in all things including giving, attending church and witnessing. Jesus said in John 14:15, “If you love Me, keep my commandments.”  But until we die or are raptured, we wil
