The Last Shall Be First

Image
Today is Super Bowl Sunday . The defending champion Kansas City Chiefs will battle against the San Francisco 49ers. Four years ago, those same two teams played for the Vince Lombardi Trophy. I rooted for the Chiefs because of a prophecy promising revival would occur when that team wins the big game. Instead, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. That prompted many pastors to close down their churches. Around the time the Chiefs won the big game again last year, the Asbury Outpouring in Kentucky happened but got shut down after a couple of weeks. I’m still expecting a greater end-time harvest of souls to manifest before the Lord’s return. Since  the  Minnesota Vikings  ( my favorite team ) won’t be playing, I don’t care who wins Super Bowl LVIII. Often I don’t watch the game live, but catch the highlights later on YouTube. I prefer to avoid seeing all the pregame hype, commercials, and the halftime show. I’m also repelled by the increasing wokeness in professional sports. The NFL ...

A Two-Minute Warning

Image
This past Monday night during a football game between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals, 24-year-old Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest and was in critical condition, but is recovering. That game got suspended and then cancelled. It brought to my remembrance the only player known for dying during a NFL contest.   Back in 1971, Detroit Lions wide receiver Chuck Hughes collapsed on the field in the closing seconds of a game against the Chicago Bears. While he got rushed to the hospital, the game went on before a silent crowd of over 54,000 fans. Chuck was soon pronounced dead from a heart attack. He was only 28 years old.  Football fans look up to players like they are larger than life. Sadly, others have died young through a variety of circumstances. One of them played for my favorite team. During the Minnesota Vikings 2001 training camp, offensive tackle Korey Stringer had a heat stroke and hours later died from complications. He was 27. Anothe...

Pigskin Prophet?

Image
Shortly after the Kansas City Chiefs won the AFC Championship Game two weeks ago, Facebook friends posted a meme about the late Bob Jones who died in 2014. This prophet had ( according to Shawn Bolz ) predicted revival would come when the Chiefs win the Super Bowl. At first, I was skeptical of this prophecy. I recalled a similar one that surfaced four years earlier regarding the Carolina Panthers . They lost Super Bowl 50 to the Denver Broncos. Critics may look at all this and dismiss Bob Jones as a false prophet. However, I know of other prophecies given by him that were accurate. During the late 1980s, Bob prophesied: “The black panthers are coming to the lumberyard of Charlotte.” This was years before the Carolina Panthers entered the NFL as an expansion team. Their home stadium was ultimately built on land that used to be a lumberyard. 1 Corinthians 13:9 says, “For we know in part and we prophesy in part.” It’s possible for someone to receive a word from the Lord but then h...

Go, Tebow!

Image
One of the biggest surprises of the current National Football League season is the success of Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow. Ever since the Heismann Trophy winner became the starter this year, the Broncos have lost only one game. What makes Tim’s success even more amazing is his statistics haven’t been that impressive for an NFL quarterback. Yet the Broncos have pulled off a string of last-minute comebacks. Unfortunately for me, one of those wins was against my favorite team (the Minnesota Vikings). People have debated if God involves Himself in the outcome of sporting events. One thing to keep in mind is when two teams are playing, there are usually Christians praying on both sides of the ball. Still, only one team can win. Nonetheless, I believe the Lord will bless athletes who give Him the glory and aren’t ashamed to praise His name in public. In January 2000, Kurt Warner put “first things first” and thanked Jesus on national television after leading the St. Louis Rams to a...
