An Open Letter to Macklemore

Image
Dear Macklemore, This letter is a response to your comments at the recent Palestine Will Live Forever Festival. First, let me tell you about myself. I could be considered a rapper since I rap better than sing. Years ago, I pursued a career in the recording industry . I worked as a disc jockey plus produced electronic music that received national radio exposure. Then in the 1990s, I committed my life to Jesus and became a missionary. Occasionally, I glance at the Billboard website to see what’s happening with the music scene. I first became familiar with you in 2013 when your gay anthem “ Same Love ” became a hit. A short time later, a friend who performs Christian rap in parades added “And We Danced” and “Can’t Hold Us” to his repertoire but with rewritten lyrics. I helped him remix the parodies of your songs. You once told an interviewer, “I want to be someone who is respected and not just in terms of my music. I want to be respected in terms of the way that I treat people.” I ...

What Would Jesus Bake?

There are increasing news reports of homosexuals walking into Christian-owned businesses and threatening legal action if refused service. One pizzeria in Indiana was set up by a local TV station but that ploy backfired. The owners temporarily closed their doors after receiving all kinds of threats for announcing they wouldn’t cater food at a same-sex wedding. Someone launched a GoFundMe page for this pizzeria to help offset lost income resulting from this fiasco. In just a few days, almost 30,000 people donated over $840,000! One of my Facebook friends recently posted a photo suggesting Christian bakers make TWO wedding cakes when approached by gay couples because Jesus told us to “go the extra mile.” I believe this is a misapplication  of God’s word. Christians are not to affirm sexual immorality but flee from it (1 Corinthians 6:18). Years ago I worked as a disc jockey at a variety of places including wedding receptions. If I was still doing that today and someone asked m...

A God of Their Own

In Matthew 15:14, Jesus labelled the Pharisees “blind leaders of the blind.” Nowadays there are individuals attempting to be God’s mouthpiece but make statements contrary to His word.  A few days ago during a Sky News interview, singer Elton John claimed Jesus would approve of same-sex marriage. In another interview four years earlier, he told Parade magazine, “I think Jesus was a compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems.” In a recent letter published in two North Dakota newspapers, a homosexual blogger named Taylor Brorby wrote, “Many people will use religious Scriptures in this debate [regarding same-sex marriage], misconstruing their true meaning of love.” I googled Taylor Brorby’s name and discovered he’s written other articles quoting Bible verses. In one about the lake of fire, Brorby concluded the article by stating, “The Bible helps move us towards asking interesting and insightful questions...it helps us know our place in the family of thi...

The Law of Love

Image
This past Tuesday in front of the State Capitol in St. Paul, Governor Mark Dayton signed a bill making same-sex marriage legal in Minnesota effective August 1, 2013.   This so-called “history-making” event was attended by thousands of people.   I happened to be in St. Paul that evening but was evangelizing by a lake five miles from the Capitol. A few hours before the bill was signed, an old childhood friend who I reconnected with through Facebook posted the music video for “Love is the Law.”   This song by the Suburbs was a regional hit thirty years ago.   I used to like this song but was saddened to learn the Minneapolis-based group had donated use of it for the cause of “marriage equality.” The Bible has a few things to say about the law of love… “Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law.” - Romans 13:8 “Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.” -...
