Face the Music

Image
One thing that kept me away from Christianity during my younger years was religious ideas regarding music . Some church folk preaches against genres of music they hate, such as hard rock and rap. After becoming a believer, I learned of one denomination that prohibits musical instruments during worship services. They only allow a cappella singing. A meme circulating online lists the following reasons why some believers are against instrumental music for worship (along with Scripture references to defend their beliefs): Was not commanded by Christ (Matthew 28:18-20, Colossians 3:17) Goes beyond the doctrine of Christ, and adds to the Word of God (2 John 9-11) Makes worship vain (Matthew 15:1-9) Is not a part of true worship (John 4:24) Is not a part of “the truth” of the Apostles (John 16:13; 17:17) Is not walking by faith (Roman 10:17) I find these narrow interpretations of God’s word ridiculous. Laptops, tablets, and smartphones aren’t in the Bible. Wouldn’t that mean one shou...

From Nu Skin to the New Birth

Image
At the beginning of 1990, I became dissatisfied with life. At 26 I had mounting debts from pursuing a music career and lost my enthusiasm working as a nightclub disc jockey. Around this time, a radio program I listened to called “Musical Starstreams” started running ads about a business opportunity. Forest (the show’s host) talked about a way one could earn a large income and have the time to enjoy it. Soon I received a video in the mail about a network marketing company called Nu Skin. After watching the video, I was intrigued enough to call Forest and find out why he was involved with a company that manufactured personal care products. Forest explained he wanted to make enough money to buy radio stations and air new age music full-time. Since Nu Skin was experiencing exponential growth, I decided to take advantage of this “opportunity of a lifetime.” I sold all my recording equipment to have extra money for purchasing product and sales aids. My goal was to build a residual inc...

“I Am God”

Sometimes when evangelizing, I meet individuals who have the audacity to claim they are God Almighty. This morning during a prayer walk, I stopped to witness to a man smoking a cigar and carrying a skateboard. While handing him a gospel tract, I noticed a cross around his neck and made reference to that. A couple of times he called me an angel. I replied that I’m simply a minister. The rest of the conversation went something like this… Me: ”Do you know for sure you’re going to heaven when your life ends?” Him: “I’m in heaven right now.” Me: “Why do you say that?” Him: “I see angels all around me.” Me: “Do you see demons also?” Him: “Yes.” Me: “What do you know about Jesus Christ?” Him: “I am.” Me: “What do you mean, ‘I am’?” Him: “I am God.” Me: “The Bible says the hairs on our head are numbered. So if you’re God, will you please tell me the exact number of hairs on my head? After pausing a few seconds, he answered: “1,200” (I later re...

Oh My Stars!

Facebook is a convenient way to stay in touch with friends, reconnect with old ones and meet new people. It’s also provided me an outlet to minister to numerous folks at once plus share evangelism testimonies. But just like any other technological tool, Facebook can be used for ungodly purposes. I’ve noticed a few friends posting horoscopes on their Facebook pages. Perhaps some of them are ignorant of what the Bible says regarding astrology and the occult. That’s why it’s important to read the word of God. There are numerous warnings about seeking counsel from astrologers and fortunetellers. Here are a few of them… “And the person who turns to mediums and familiar spirits, to prostitute himself with them, I will set My face against that person and cut him off from his people.” - Leviticus 20:6 “ There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, o...

Music That God Likes

Image
Have you ever wondered what music in heaven will sound like?People who go to mainline traditional churches might assume they will listen to organ music or angelic choirs for eons.   Others might believe they will hear Black & Southern Gospel like they do now in their congregations.   On the other hand, individuals who received glimpses of eternity testified of hearing sounds unlike anything on earth.   There’s an old saying, “Music soothes the savage beast.”   This is some truth to that.   Songs played by God’s people can dramatically change the atmosphere we are in.   1 Samuel 16:23 mentions “…that David would take a harp and play it with his hand.   Then Saul would become refreshed and well, and the distressing spirit would depart from him.” On the other hand, music played for ungodly purposes can have a negative effect.   During the late 1980s and early 1990s I listened to a lot of New Age music.   The genre’s dreamy...
