The Internet is an awesome tool, but like other things can be a distraction from doing more productive things. I’ll admit to have spent hours on social media plus reading Wikipedia articles and watching YouTube videos that have little or no eternal value. A pastor I recently stayed with in the Buffalo, New York area suggested we go on a “media fast.” I perceived the Lord told me to do that for three days. Pastor Mark and I agreed to start Monday at midnight. Technically, I began my media fast around 11:40 p.m. the night before. I turned off my MacBook Air, iPad, and iPhone before storing them on a shelf. Adjustments needed to be made. I usually fall asleep to an audio Bible or sermon, plus I journal and take notes with my electronic devices. I had to use pen and paper again. Facebook can be an awesome tool to reconnect with old friends and make new ones. I’ve also seen the social media platform abused . One thing I won’t tolerate is people being deceptive with me online .  Three days ago, it appeared I received a friend request from the son of a female missionary. In the past, I had issues with this woman but opted to accept her son’s request. Then I received a friend request from the woman, plus a message explaining she sent the friend request through her son’s account. It turns out he hates Facebook and no longer uses it. After waiting a couple of days to decide what to do, I deleted her friend request and disconnect from her son’s account. Scammers have set up fake social media accounts of well-known ministers in hopes of receiving money from undiscerning donors . Once I received a friend request from someone impersonating Bill Winston, a megachurch pastor in the Chicago area. What really raised red flags in my mind was the account “liking” four ...

Social media is a powerful tool that can be used for good or bad. That includes missing person alerts. Many posted online have the added plea, “It only takes seconds to share.” Verifying that a missing person report is legitimate and still active also takes a few seconds. For years, I’ve noticed many of these cases have been resolved and need to stop circulating .   In recent months, more missing child alerts have become phishing scams. Facebook posts about so-called missing children are later changed to something one might be selling or lead to a link to extract money from people. Unless it’s your child or someone you know, it’s best not to share these alerts until you do some research. A website called TinEye allows one to do a reverse image search. Thirty years ago this month, I got serious about soul-winning. Starting in June 1994, I went out street witnessing with Living Word Christian Center almost every Monday night. I was assigned to a team of usually three people. Within a few months, I felt ready to be a team leader. However, a few more weeks passed before Pastor Nick Kinn ’s assistant asked me to start leading evangelism teams. A year later, I went to work for Billy Graham ’s film ministry World Wide Pictures. I was often the top salesperson of the week. My team leader even suggested our co-workers study my telemarketing techniques. Social media is a powerful tool I use for ministry. It has also been a distraction. Many of us will admit to spending hours scrolling through our news feeds. I enjoy the occasional humor and cute pet photos. Still, a lot of frivolous things appear I don’t care to see and read. A few are insulting, such as saying I’m “old” if I recognize a particular item. I don’t mean to be critical of what people post on their social media pages. That’s their business. Fortunately, there’s a way to stay connected with select individuals without unfriending them and having their posts appear in my news feed. I’ve been unfollowing Facebook friends who repeatedly do the following: Make too many posts. I’ve seen as much as forty a day by some folks (rarely do I exceed two or three). I don’t need the same individuals overwhelming my news feed. There are other friends I want to hear from. Post chain letters , hoaxes, and memes that contain profanity . Make requests for money. Criminals continue to come up with new schemes to steal money from people. One way is through hacking social media accounts. Before leaving the house this past Wednesday to get my morning coffee, I briefly went on Facebook with my iPhone. I saw this question from a fellow missionary’s page: “My cousin is looking for an old-fashioned name for her baby girl! What is a classic grandma’s name for a shot at $2,500?”  Although most online giveaways I’ve seen are phishing scams, I decided to participate in case this was legitimate. I typed “Ethel” in the comments section. Moments later, “Sandy” replied, “Inbox me right now for your payment.” My suspicions increased because another woman had posted a claim this wasn’t a scam and included a screenshot of receiving over $2,200. I examined Denise’s Facebook page and noticed questionable posts, including her own giveaway. I waited a few minutes to see what else might happen.  “Sandy” soon inboxed me asking for my CashApp info. I waited...

I’m an evangelist whose mission is to preach the gospel and teach others to do the same. For over 15 years, I’ve used Facebook as a tool for ministry. Despite our First Amendment rights to freedom of speech, many Americans have had to be more careful about what they say and post online. Sadly, one politically incorrect statement could cause someone to have their voice silenced. On June 7th, my friend Luca posted this question on her Facebook page, “if you could go back in time and take Hitler out, would you?” I posted this comment in response:  “I would've liked the opportunity to take Hitler out for dinner when he was a young man and share the gospel with him. As a boy, Adolf had considered becoming a priest. Imagine what could have happened if he received a new heart and spirit. For 15 years now, I’ve been on Facebook plus added other social media platforms. Since I use Facebook as a tool for ministry, I will accept most friend requests as long as my potential friend appears to be a God-fearing person and has a legitimate profile photo . If a person I don’t know doesn’t have a sufficient number of Facebook friends, then their request is deleted. I’m suspicious of individuals who immediately go outside their circle of influence before connecting with people they already know. I’ve learned to set other boundaries . Some of my Facebook friends post too much stuff online. I noticed one woman make over 40 posts on the same day! Digital entrepreneur Neil Patel says, “If you post too infrequently, your audience will forget that you exist and you will quickly fade into the deep dark recesses of their minds. In the classic police drama “Dragnet,” Sergeant Joe Friday (portrayed by the late Jack Webb) implored informants, “All we want are the facts.” Parodies have paraphrased this to where many believe Friday frequently said, “Just the facts, ma’am.” The truth is he never uttered that exact phrase on radio or TV. However, it was used to promote the 1987 movie “Dragnet” and as the title of an authorized biography of Jack Webb. As stated before in this blog, I refuse to pass on chain letters . They often contain outdated or inaccurate information. A new one that’s appeared in my Facebook news feed is Tim Tebow warning us about the government preparing us for a cashless society. I don't believe Tim wrote this. It resembles a meme falsely attributed to another well-known Christian.  For years, a prayer request has circulated with Joyce Meyer’s name attached to it. One of my Facebook friends recently posted a meme with this prayer: “Lord, empty me of me so I can be filled of You.” Technically, this is impossible. We are all unique individuals with talents, hopes, and dreams. God didn’t create us to be robots. A Christian can pray to be filled with the Holy Spirit and then obey His promptings instead of fulfilling selfish desires.  A personal example that comes to my mind happened over twenty years ago. While walking around my neighborhood, I saw five boys playing football in a church parking lot. A thought crossed my mind that when their football landed by me, that would be a sign to witness to them. Seconds later, the football bounced my way when one of the boys made a bad punt. However, I wanted to be by myself and went straight home. God kept telling me to go back. So I put my shoes on and hurried to the parking lot where the boys were still playing. Facebook is a marvelous tool to connect with people and minister to them. It’s also a source of occasional frustration and conflict. Aside from increased censorship by social media platforms , you risk offending others no matter how you speak the truth in love. One time a woman unfriended me after I advised her not to sow discord amongst my other friends (Proverbs 6:19) regarding another minister we had differing opinions. I’ve also had preachers promote their ministries and make fundraising appeals on my Facebook pages despite asking them to stop. That prompted me to change my account settings. Friends can only write comments in response to my articles and praise reports. Still, people will post stuff irrelevant to my writings. Usually, I remove these posts but have unfriended individuals who won’t respect my boundaries . In recent years, I’ve blocked (but not unfriended) many people on Messenger.
