Hope in the Pope?

Image
Growing up Lutheran, I was unfamiliar with what Catholics believe until committing my life to Christ years later. I was 14 when two popes died within 33 days of each other in 1978. I hated it when their funerals preempted some of my favorite TV programs. I remember saying in frustration to my mother, “The Pope is a dope.” Since becoming a street evangelist, I’ve learned how to compassionately minister the gospel to Catholics. Instead of criticizing tenets of Catholicism that conflict with Scripture , I aim to find common ground with them, such as their belief that Jesus is the Son of God and He died on the cross for our sins. I recall only one witnessing incident when the Pope was brought up. I had lunch with an aunt and uncle, who professed to be Christians despite going to church only on Easter and Christmas. Although my aunt isn’t Catholic, I was surprised to hear her suddenly defend the Pope as a great person.  I believe it’s okay to honor the Pope as a politician since he...

Mary Had a Little Lamb

Image
One of the most popular nursery rhymes is “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” According to Wikipedia , it originated from a true story in early America. The rhyme was the first recording made by Thomas Edison on his newly invented phonograph in 1877. Lowell Mason composed the well-known melody for “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” Many of us learned how to play it on the piano because it’s so simple. I once heard a girl play the song on her push-button telephone on the radio. Paul McCartney had a hit with that title but composed an entirely new melody. Two days ago I posted this on my social media pages: “If Mary had Jesus, and Jesus is the Lamb of God, does that mean Mary had a little lamb?” A Facebook friend claimed the nursery rhyme was based on the Virgin Mary . That isn’t true but it reminded me of this poem heard at a Joyce Meyer meeting (read by her husband Dave)… Mary had a little Lamb, His fleece was as white as snow.  And everywhere that Mary went,  The Lamb was sure to go. He ...

Heavenly Homes

Image
A few years ago, actress Jennifer Anniston purchased a one-bedroom penthouse apartment in New York City for $8 million. Around that time, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg bought a $7 million home in California. It was also reported Michael Jordan was building a home in Florida with an estimated value of $20 million. The secular media doesn’t mind celebrities and athletes owning multi-million houses. Yet they will launch an “exposé” if a preacher buys (or is given) a house for a fraction of that amount. Even some believers are critical of brethren with nice domiciles. One time a homeless man I met in Florida complained about a local pastor having a $500,000 house. Before you pity this homeless man, it should be pointed out he was a modern-day Jonah running from the call to preach. God will bless those who will obey His will for their lives. Isaiah 1:19-20 says, “‘If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land; But if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured b...

Why I Hail Jesus and Not Mary

Image
Mention the phrase “Hail Mary” and football fans think of a desperation pass usually thrown by a team trailing in the final seconds of a close game. The phrase became part of the football lexicon following a 1975 NFL playoff game in which (to my disappointment) the Minnesota Vikings lost to the Dallas Cowboys. Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach revealed he “closed my eyes and said a Hail Mary” before throwing the winning touchdown pass to wide receiver Drew Pearson. The traditional Hail Mary prayer recited by Catholics like Staubach goes like this: Hail Mary, full of grace. Our Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. When witnessing to Catholics, I’m sometimes asked about praying to the Virgin Mary. There are reasons why that is unscriptural: Mary did not remain a virgin after Jesus’ birth. Matthew 1:25 says Joseph “...did not ...
