Pets vs. People

In one of his YouTube videos , conservative radio talk show host Dennis Prager asked, “If you saw your dog and a stranger drowning, which would you save first?” In surveys he’s done with students, two-thirds have voted against the stranger. British evangelist Leonard Ravenhill stated, “Today’s Christians spend more money on dog food than missions.” One study determined Christians spend twenty times more money on Halloween costumes for their pets than preaching the gospel in unreached areas. That demonstrates how some believers value their pets more than men's souls. Jesus said in Matthew 6:21, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” I know how painful it is to lose a pet. As a boy, I wept heavily after the family cat got hit by a car and died. While some believe their deceased pets are in heaven , they don’t need to be redeemed. Jesus came to bring salvation to humans, not animals. It should also be pointed out God Himself said that man was alone until He c...

A Cat Lover and a God Chaser

Image
All my life I’ve liked cats even though they are typically not as friendly as dogs. Before I became a teenager, there was usually a cat in the household. One that I loved dearly was a black-and-white critter named Yo-Yo. While in sixth grade, I came home from school one afternoon and received terrible news. My mother informed me Yo-Yo got hit by a car and died. I cried heavily for the next two days. A decade passed before my parents got another cat. By that time, I had moved out. I’ve never owned a cat, but enjoy playing with other people’s pets.  For over twenty years now, I’ve occasionally stayed at a missionary house in Tampa, Florida. A few stray cats hang around the property. A neighbor woman comes by twice a day to feed them. Many of these cats run away when I try petting them, but some have warmed up to me. There’s one that occasionally comes up wanting affection, but will become vicious if I accidentally touch his backside. I’ve gotten scratched a few times. Then there’s...

In Remembrance of Scooby a/k/a Seal Dog

Image
All my life I’ve been a cat lover but in recent years developed an increasing appreciation for dogs. One in particular that I grew fond of recently passed away. When I first stayed with my friend Lorvin in 2013, he had two beagles named Rocky and Scooby. I noticed Scooby’s bark sounded like a seal. So we started calling him Seal Dog. I never got tired of hearing his “seal squeal.” Scooby wagged his tail while barking and howling for me. I believe he enjoyed the extra attention. Rocky usually wouldn’t bark when I tried getting him to do so. Seal Dog always responded instead. Lorvin got the idea of turning Scooby into a superhero . He ordered a Superman outfit for dogs since the “S” could also stand for Seal Dog. An Underdog outfit was ordered for Rocky who I nicknamed Überdog. Just for fun, I created videos of these characters. One of them was for a song I composed. “ Seal Dog Theme ” got played on the Dr. Demento radio show. Later when Lorvin got married, his wife Tanya insisted on...

Will We See Our Pets in Heaven?

Image
It’s sad when a loved one dies. That includes our pets. I remember as an 11-year-old crying heavily after our family cat Yo-Yo got hit by a car. Last year, a chihuahua owned by a close friend died of old age. I perceived Gracie’s death was imminent. Therefore, I didn’t grieve that much but loved her enough to make this  memorial video . Then last Wednesday, a cat belonging to the pastor I’m staying with died. Calico was only five years old. She often had a “cattitude” (hissing at me when I tried giving her affection). Still, I will miss her as well.  Calico’s death stimulated a short discussion with my pastor about seeing pets again in eternity. We both recalled the  Jesse Duplantis  video “ Close Encounters of the God Kind .” Jesse saw animals in heaven that included dogs. His book of the same name also mentions large cats like lions. My former pastor Mac Hammond  filmed a  teaching  about pets in heaven. It’s his opinion we will be reunited with the...
