Oneness vs. Trinity

Image
Two Pentecostal preachers were arguing over Oneness vs. The Trinity. The first preacher insisted, “God is only One Person. His name is Jesus.”  The other preacher said, “No, there’s the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I can prove it with Scripture. Stephen saw Jesus standing at the right hand of the Father. What are you going to say about that?” The Oneness preacher thought for a minute and then replied, “Well, if you’d been hit in the head with rocks, you’d see double, too.” The triune nature of God is a topic that sparks debates within parts of the Body of Christ. Some contest the word "Trinity" isn’t found in Scripture. The word “Bible” is not part of God’s word either, but can be found on the cover and added notes by the publisher.  Others argue, “How can three things be one?” What is one times one times one? It’s not three, but one! That equation has three numbers of equal value. I’ve also compared the Trinity to man which is also a three-part being: spirit, soul, a...

Don’t Get Fleeced!

Image
Many Christians struggle with knowing God’s will for their lives even though Jesus said His sheep know His voice (John 10:4). One way to increase spiritual sensitivity is to be a soul winner. Sharing your faith on a regular basis will help you recognize the leading of the Lord. He’ll show you who to talk to, who not to talk to, and what to say to the people you do talk to. Still, there are believers who seek divine direction through natural means. Recently, I talked with one who sought confirmation regarding a purchase he made by “putting out a fleece.” That concept originates from a passage in Judges 6: 36 So Gideon said to God, “If You will save Israel by my hand as You have said— 37 look, I shall put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; if there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that You will save Israel by my hand, as You have said.” 38 And it was so. When he rose early the next morning and squeezed the fleece together, he wrung...

The Teacher and The Stolen Watch

Image
Among the things I avoid looking at online are videos and articles that attempt to “expose” ministers. Some are by critics who simply disagree with a particular preacher’s theology. Then there are so-called watchdogs who believe their calling in life is to warn of clergy who have stumbled into sin. I question the motives of these watchdogs, especially when they bring up offenses committed decades ago. Are they seeking to restore or want someone they don’t like removed from the pulpit? Those who fit the latter category would benefit from reading this story I’ve seen circulating online: An old man sitting on a park bench was approached by a young man who asked, “Do you remember me?” The old man replied. “No.” “I was your student.” “What do you do now in life?” The young man answered: “Well, I became a teacher.” “Ah, like me” said the old man. “Well, yes. In fact, I became a teacher because you inspired me to be like you.” “What did I do that made you decide to become a tea...

Golfing and God

Image
I’ve never been a fan of golf. I think it’s one of the most boring sports to watch on TV. However, I have gone miniature-golfing a few times. Recently, my friend Lorvin celebrated his birthday by inviting me and a few others to play a round at the Mall of America . During our game, many of us came close to getting a hole-in-one. Lorvin’s roommate Ken finally got one near the end of the course. He also had the best golf score and proudly wrote the results of our game on the kitchen chalkboard. Over the years, I’ve heard a few jokes about Jesus golfing. In one of them, the Lord was on a golf course with Moses and an old man. Jesus went first and drove the ball into a water trap. So He walked on the water, chipped the ball onto the green, and put it for par. Moses went next. He drove the ball into the same water trap. Moses parted the water, chipped the ball onto the green, and put it for par. Then the old man teed off. Likewise, his ball headed toward the water trap. However, a fis...

Ban This Preacher

O ne of my favorite Bible teachers is Perry Stone. In addition to his “Manna-Fest” program, I watch shorter videos by Perry posted on YouTube. In one of the latter , he read this story from a book his grandfather had put together: A church was in need of a pastor. One of the elders was interested in knowing what kind of minister they desired. He therefore wrote a letter as if he had received it from an applicant. He read this letter before the Pulpit Committee: “Gentlemen, understanding that your pulpit is vacant, I would like to apply for the position. I have many qualifications that I think that you would appreciate. I've been blessed to preach with power and have had some successes as a writer. Some say I'm a good organizer. I've been a leader in most places where I've gone in the past. Some folks, however, have some things against me. I'm over 50 years of age. I've never preached in one place for more than three years at a time. In some places I have left...

I Beg Your Pardon

Image
The New Oxford American Dictionary defines pardon as “the action of forgiving or being forgiven for an error or offense .” The White House has a history of issuing them especially before a president leaves office. One of the most memorable was the 1974 pardon Gerald Ford gave shortly after the resignation of his predecessor Richard Nixon. Ford’s stated reason was to help the country move forward from the Watergate scandal. His press secretary Jerald terHorst resigned in protest. Historians believe the Nixon pardon was a major reason Ford lost the 1976 election to Jimmy Carter. Last Sunday, another controversial pardon came from the White House. Joe Biden issued one for his son Hunter who was convicted of multiple felonies but hadn’t yet been sentenced. What makes this pardon troubling is the Biden administration stating numerous times no pardons would be issued for Hunter. The outgoing president didn’t keep his word. Even if Hunter Biden appears to be getting off scot-free, he will...

My Prayers for Susan Smith

Image
A convicted murderer was recently denied parole after spending thirty years behind bars. Susan Smith of Union, South Carolina, made national headlines in October 1994 when she claimed a black man carjacked her vehicle with her two young sons strapped in the back seat. For nine days, multitudes searched for the man, the boys, and the car. After investigators pointed out discrepancies with her story, Susan confessed to plunging her vehicle into a lake, drowning 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alex. During a subsequent trial, prosecuting attorney Tommy Pope sought the death penalty. Instead, Susan was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison. In a book written by the father of the two boys, David Smith revealed he and Susan had been unfaithful to each other. I also learned about Susan’s rough upbringing. Her father committed suicide when she was six. Her mother got remarried to a man who molested Susan. Susan herself attempted to kill herself a couple of times and almost drowned herse...
