A Call for Discipleship: A Review of “The Forge”

Image
Alex and Stephen Kendrick are the producers of popular Christian movies such as “Fireproof”, “Overcomer” , and “War Room” (which reached number one at the box office in 2015). This past Thursday, I saw their latest release “The Forge.” Webster’s Dictionary defines a forge as “a furnace or a shop with its furnace where metal is heated and wrought” and “a workshop where wrought iron is produced or where iron is made malleable.” The main character in “The Forge” is Isaiah Wright, a 19-year-old African-American (played by Aspen Kennedy). His mother Cynthia (Priscilla Shirer) is tired of him doing nothing except play basketball and video games. She instructs her son to find a job and come up with rent money within one month or move out. Isaiah eventually lands a position with a manufacturer of fitness products. Owner Joshua Moore (Cameron Arnett) helps his new employee find direction and witnesses to him. In a private moment in his bedroom, Isaiah reads a “Romans Road” tract and asks Jesu

Christ Loves His Church

One thing I get tired of seeing on social media is critical posts about the current state of the church. I’ve often seen memes claiming, “If Paul could see the church in America today, we’d be getting a letter.” That reminds me of this quote from Charles Spurgeon: “The church is not perfect, but woe to the man who finds pleasure in pointing out her imperfections! Christ loved his church, and let us do the same.” Spurgeon went on to say, “I have no doubt that the Lord can see more fault in his church than I can; and I have equal confidence that he sees no fault at all. Because he covers her faults with his own love-that love which covers a multitude of sins; and he removes all her defilement with that precious blood which washes away all the transgressions of his people.” The church is often called the bride of Christ. How would you feel if someone criticized your spouse or significant other? You would take that personally. During the Damascus Road experience, the Lord asked Paul (th

A Female President? Not Kamala!

Image
One topic that stirs debates amongst believers is female preachers . Some quote Bible verses against that. However, God can use anyone to minister regardless of gender. I do believe it’s best for men to be senior pastors. Nevertheless, a woman can step into that position, especially if her husband dies and no one else is available to fill that vacancy at a church. What about a female president? I’m okay with that as long as her policies are compatible with the Judeo-Christian values this nation was founded upon. Someone like Condoleezza Rice, Sarah Palin, or Kristi Noem would have my vote if she were on the Republican ticket . On the other hand, Vice-President Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee after Joe Biden withdrew his bid for another term in the White House. There are reasons why I will not vote for her: Defends “reproductive freedom”, a euphemism for abortion, which is the murder of unborn children. Fought for “marriage equality”, a euphemism for same-sex marriage.

Weird vs. Peculiar

I don’t watch much TV, especially during election season with the numerous political advertisements in which candidates mostly criticize their opponents. Unfortunately, it’s hard to avoid them on the Internet. I’m annoyed with frequent interruptions by Vice-President Kamala Harris while watching YouTube videos (very few have come up regarding Donald Trump ). While on the campaign trail, Harris called Trump and his running mate J. D. Vance “weird.” Yet she and many of her fellow Democrats claim it’s normal for men   to pretend to be women.   Webster’s 1828 dictionary defined weird as “skilled in witchcraft.” Newer dictionaries define it as “strange or odd; unusual - particular; special” and “…of strange or extraordinary character:”  The New Oxford American dictionary defines weird as “suggesting something supernatural; uncanny.” I’ve seen cities with signs like “Keep Portland Weird.” Most of us have probably heard of musician “Weird Al” Yankovic and possibly “Old Weird” Harold from “F
