A New Iran Coming?


Since June 13th of this year, the news has been dominated by reports about the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. The United States has now become more involved in the situation. Initially, the U.S. provided support to Israel by intercepting incoming Iranian missiles and drones. Yesterday, President Donald Trump issued a statement. Here’s a portion of it: 

“A short time ago, the US military carried out massive precision strikes on the three key nuclear facilities in the Iranian regime: Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan. Everybody heard those names for years as they built this horribly destructive enterprise. Our objective was the destruction of Iran’s nuclear enrichment capacity and a stop to the nuclear threat posed by the world’s number one state sponsor of terror.


"Tonight, I can report to the world that the strikes were a spectacular military success. Iran’s key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated. Iran, the bully of the Middle East, must now make peace. If they do not, future attacks will be far greater and a lot easier. 


"For 40 years, Iran has been saying, ‘Death to America, death to Israel.’ They have been killing our people, blowing off their arms, blowing off their legs with roadside bombs – that was their speciality. We lost over a thousand people, and hundreds of thousands throughout the Middle East and around the world have died as a direct result of their hate, in particular, so many were killed by their general, Qassem Soleimani. I decided a long time ago that I would not let this happen.”


Until 1979, Iran maintained good relations with both Israel and the United States. However, the Islamic Revolution brought about significant changes. I was in high school during the Iranian Hostage Crisis, which resulted in 52 Americans being held captive for 444 days. Since then, the Iranian government has consistently labeled Israel as “the little Satan” and America as “the Great Satan.” Despite this, I’ve come across reports of Iranians cheering the attacks on their country. They are deeply frustrated with their government’s oppressive and tyrannical rule. They want to see the downfall of their wicked regime. 


Russian hardliners have talked about coming to Tehran’s aid, which could lead to the fulfillment of the prophesied war of Gog and Magog in Ezekiel 38. Even if the Iranian government were to develop a functional nuclear weapon, they would not be able to eliminate Israel. God has His protective hand upon His chosen people. Amos 9:15 says, “‘I will plant them in their land, and no longer shall they be pulled up from the land I have given them,’ Says the Lord your God.”


A few preachers have suggested a regime change will happen soon in Iran. I pray that occurs so that the gospel can be freely preached there.


“And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.” - Matthew 24:14

Toking the Ghost Revisited

Back in February 2007, a fellow missionary I was traveling with started talking about “smoking the weed from heaven.”   He would pretend to have a joint of marijuana between his fingers and have “smoke breaks with Jesus.”   He also encouraged other believers to take “hits.”   I was a bit uncomfortable with this idea but didn't contest it. Then in October of that year, I heard John Crowder preach on “toking the Ghost” at a church in my hometown of Fargo, North Dakota.   I was inspired to make a video with John to share with my missionary friend.   During the filming, I experienced much laughter. A Tribute to Al Best

October is Pastor Appreciation Month. This tribute is for one who went home to be with the Lord last Sunday. Al Best oversaw Light in Anoka Church in a northern suburb of Minneapolis. Originally from Florida, Al first gave his life to the Lord at 17 but then backslid. Meanwhile, he served 21 years in the Navy and worked various jobs. That included selling Rainbow vacuum cleaners. I would eventually get to know his sales manager. Eric Gonyon became an associate pastor at Rodney Howard-Browne ’s church (I usually attend services there when in Tampa).  A few years after recommitting his life to the Lord, Al became a pastor. In 2007, the Lord directed him to head north to Minnesota, where his wife Jean is from. First, they ministered in the small town of Dassel.
