Why I Don’t Agree With “Evandalism”
Over the last few days, controversial billboards have appeared in California and other states claiming: “THE BIBLE SAYS…JESUS IS NOT GOD.” The billboards were paid for by World’s Last Chance. This organization promotes other heretical ideas, including the belief in a flat earth. One man in Los Angeles responded by covering the “NOT” on one billboard with black paint, so it read: “THE BIBLE SAYS…JESUS IS GOD.” Many Christians have applauded what some label “evandalism.”
I certainly don’t agree with the billboard’s original message. However, defacing them will likely lead to vandals doing the same to billboards advertising churches and evangelistic crusades. A better response would be to display counter billboards proclaiming the truth about Jesus.
During my recent seasonal stay in the Tampa Bay area, I briefly ministered with another street preacher who frequently pasted Christian stickers on various surfaces, including road signs, light poles, public toilets, and other properties he didn’t own. I felt uneasy about his actions, for they leave a bad witness to unbelievers who have to remove the stickers. An online search confirmed that his behavior is illegal. Similar to graffiti, it is considered a form of vandalism. He could face fines if caught.
This street preacher also stuck Post-it notes with gospel messages in public places. I liked those better since they can be easily removed by people who might be interested in taking them. I sent him a text recommending he “stick” with them. He claimed, “My stickers are famous in this area…I noticed the businesses that do remove them usually close down.” Due to this and other disagreements, we stopped working together.
Romans 13:1 says, “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities.” Sometimes there are exceptions. The Lord has led me to give tracts and pray with people in shopping malls, even though most business owners and security guards don’t want me “soliciting.” Nevertheless, Christians can create other ways to share the gospel without breaking the law. The truth of God’s word will always prevail.
“But the mouth of those who speak lies shall be stopped.” - Psalm 63:11
