Give a Little Bit
One Sunday morning, while taking a prayer walk, I was contemplating what to teach during the upcoming church service’s offering. Suddenly, a phrase struck me: “Give a Little Bit.” You may recognize this as the title of a 1977 hit by Supertramp. I once watched a fundraising video that a missionary had shown, where that very song played in the background.
Sometimes all we have is a little bit to give. One widow in the Bible gave the little she had, but Jesus commended her for that:
41 Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much.
42 Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites, which make a quadrans.
43 So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury;
44 for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood.”
It’s been said, “If it’s not enough to meet your need, plant a seed.” One time in 2001, I went to Calvary Campground for a men’s convention. I arrived with only 21 cents, which I gave in the first offering. When I returned to my seat, a man sitting next to me, whom I didn’t even know, handed me $7. Later, two men who shared my room gave me $40. At that time, I was preparing to launch my website and needed $30 to purchase the domain and hosting fee.
Your seeds don’t always have to be money. Once I read about a disc jockey named Dick Ervasti who was struggling financially, but desired a career in voiceover work. In 1990, the Lord instructed him to offer his talents to Kenneth Copeland Ministries. Dick sent them tapes narrating their product and promotional advertisements without pay. Then in 1994, he applied for and landed a lucrative job as the announcer for the newly-created Fox Sports.
God desires the prosperity of His children (3 John 2). Therefore, if you are facing financial difficulties, the initial step is to tithe. Subsequently, seek guidance from the Lord on how and where to give beyond that. Whether it’s your money, possessions, time, or talents, God will multiply your offerings if you trust in Him.
“…for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” - Matthew 17:20
