Apple Myths Debunked

This Wednesday, Apple Computer Company celebrates its golden anniversary. It was founded on April 1, 1976, by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne. Today, Apple’s product range encompasses smartphones, tablets, and various electronic devices, alongside laptops and desktop computers.

Some Christians have raised concerns about certain aspects of Apple Inc. Their first computer was priced at $666.66. While I can understand how a believer might feel uneasy purchasing a product with all sixes in the price, it’s not the Mark of the Beast. Buyers didn’t have that stamped on their right hand or forehead. Wozniak himself claims that he was unaware of the connection between the number and the beast mentioned in Revelation. He came up with the price because he liked “repeating digits.”

The Apple logo has also been a source of controversy. Some Christians believe the bite was inspired by the forbidden fruit consumed in the Garden of Eden. However, the Bible doesn’t explicitly state that Adam and Eve ate an apple. It’s possible that it was a fig, as they used fig leaves to cover their nakedness. The bite (designed by Rob Janoff in 1977) was added so people wouldn't confuse that with a cherry. Their original logo featured Isaac Newton sitting under an Apple tree. Steve Jobs wanted something simpler.

Others believe the bite was inspired by the computer term “byte.” Janoff didn’t consider that when he created the logo. He calls it a “happy coincidence.” However, an early ad for their first computer encouraged buyers to “byte into an Apple.”

The six colored stripes often used in the Apple logo bear a resemblance to the rainbow flag used by LGBT activists. Given Apple’s support for gay rights (their current CEO is a homosexual), one could assume a connection. However, the colors in the logo are in a different order compared to the flag, which wasn’t officially adopted by gay activists until 1979 after a varying number of colors were used. The rainbow added to the Apple logo signified that it was the first consumer computer to display colored images.

For the record, I’m a Christian missionary who has owned various Apple products for the past two decades. Usually, I boycott companies that endorse ungodly causes. I disagree with other political ideologies promoted by Apple, but I prefer their products over PCs and Androids. It would be nice if more of God’s people invented cutting edge technology. Until then, I will continue using my MacBook, iPad, and iPhone as tools to serve the Lord.
