Soylent Green vs. The New Year

Growing up, I liked watching science fiction movies that attempted to predict the future. One of them was “Soylent Green”, a 1973 dystopian drama starring Charlton Heston. Set in 2022, Heston played detective Frank Thorn who works for the New York Police Department. He investigates the murder of a board member of the Soylent Corporation, which controls half the world’s food production. Their featured product is a wafer allegedly made from plankton. Thorn finds out Soylent Green is made of people.

Recently I watched “Soylent Green” online and noticed how their portrayal of 2022 is much different than the world we live in today…

  • New York City currently has just over 8.8 million residents, a fraction of the 40,000,000 mentioned in the movie. Even the entire state of New York has about half the number of people. Overpopulation concerns have been for naught.
  • The movie mentions a year-round heatwave caused by the greenhouse effect. Despite continued fear-mongering by environmentalists, global warming remains a hoax. (I’m writing this from Minnesota, where we are experiencing the usual cold winter weather.)
  • Technology didn’t advance much in the movie. Instead of a cell phone, Thorn used a landline from a box near his home to make calls to his superior. Also, a woman Thorn had a relationship with played a “Computer Space” video game that appeared in arcades in the early 1970s. Nowadays, such a game would be considered a dinosaur.
  • Inflation isn’t as bad, particularly with natural foods. A jar of strawberry jam in the movie cost $150. Local stores sell them today for just a couple of bucks.
  • Modified garbage trucks were used for riot control. “Scoops” would catch people and dump them in the back of the truck. In recent years, many cities have tolerated looters and other individuals breaking the law. I’d like to see scoops used to remove protesters blocking public roadways. That would cause them to think twice about disrupting the livelihood of others in the name of “black lives matter.”

One thing “Soylent Green” got right was showing more people wearing masks in public. However, this was because of air pollution and not a virus. In addition, masks weren’t mandated like they are now in certain situations.

Once the church is raptured, things will worsen for the world. Godless politicians left behind will be free to promote their globalist agendas until the Lord returns. In the meantime, some awesome plans and purposes await those who put their trust in Him. Hopefully, you are one of them.
