What a Drag
As a child, I watched TV programs that sometimes had men pretending to be women or vice versa. Stage presentations of “Peter Pan” often had a woman play the title character. During fourth grade, I sang in a school program based on the Book of Daniel called “It’s Cool in the Furnace.” A girl played the role of Daniel.
I’ve also seen movies where men played women. One of them was “Tootsie” starring Dustin Hoffman as a struggling actor who landed a role in a soap opera by impersonating a woman. Another was “Back to the Future II.” Michael J. Fox portrayed a girl named Marlene McFly (the daughter of Marty McFly also played by him). Years ago, men played female roles in ancient Greek theatre, early Shakespeare, and Japanese kabuki.
During the 1980s, I hadn’t thought much about cross-gender acting. I was more creeped out with male musicians looking like women. The British band Culture Club became famous for their androgynous lead singer. Boy George’s appearance turned me off, but I liked Culture Club’s music enough to buy their first two albums. Then while attending a Peters Brothers seminar, they pointed out from Scripture how transvestism is evil in God’s eyes. I wouldn't fully share their concerns until becoming a Christian in 1991.
God expects people to live as the gender He created them to be. Unfortunately, misguided individuals are trying to normalize alternative lifestyles. One Panera Bread I no longer patronize has displayed a rainbow flag in its window for almost a year. Libraries and businesses such as Whole Foods Market have sponsored “Drag Queen Story Hours.” Taco Bell is advertising a drag show in their Breakfast Box in selected cities. I used to enjoy their breakfast burritos but have lost my appetite for them.
If all that wasn’t bad enough, transvestites are infiltrating churches. A Lutheran fellowship in South Carolina had scheduled a “Drag Me to Church” event for this past Thursday (but got postponed). The church’s Facebook page declared, “You'll be endlessly entertained as the Lady Douché leads us through her unique style of worship which includes as many laughs as it does amens!” It reminded me of this quote from Charles Spurgeon: “A time will come when instead of shepherds feeding the sheep, the church will have clowns entertaining the goats.”
How does Jesus feel about drag shows in churches that profess His name? One might picture Him taking a whip and driving out these deviant performers as He did with the moneychangers in the temple. Deuteronomy 22:5 calls cross-dressing “an abomination.” However, Jesus died for transvestites as well. For those who will repent, Jesus would likely repeat what He told the woman caught in adultery in John chapter 8: “Go and sin no more.”
If a man wants to wear feminine attire, that’s his decision. However, I will not support businesses encouraging this behavior. It’s sickening to push this trash upon children. And for God’s sake, keep drag queens out of our churches! Ministers who promote ungodly living are treading on dangerous ground.
“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.” - 1 Corinthians 6:9-11
